วันปิยมหาราช

วันปิยมหาราช ตรงกับวันที่ 23 ตุลาคม ของทุกปี เป็นวันคล้ายวันสวรรคตของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว เนื่องจากพระองค์ทรงเป็นที่รักใคร่อย่างล้นเหลือของพสกนิกรทั้งชาวไทยและชาวต่างประเทศ พระองค์จึงได้รับการถวายพระราชสมัญญานามว่า "สมเด็จพระปิยมหาราช" ซึ่งมีความหมายว่า "พระมหากษัตริย์ที่ทรงเป็นที่รักยิ่งของปวงชน" ด้วยความสำนึกในพระมหากรุณาธิคุณ รัฐบาลจึงได้ประกาศให้วันที่ 23 ตุลาคม เป็น "วันปิยมหาราช" ในวันปิยมหาราช พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว พร้อมด้วยพระบรมวงศานุวงศ์ จะเสด็จฯ ไปวางพวงมาลา ณ พระบรมรูปทรงม้าซึ่งตั้งอยู่ที่หน้าพระที่นั่งอนันตสมาคมเป็นประจำทุกปี

พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาจุฬาลงกรณ์ฯ พระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงเป็นพระมหากษัตริย์สยาม รัชกาลที่ 5 แห่งราชวงศ์จักรี เสด็จพระราชสมภพเมื่อวันอังคาร เดือน 10 แรม 3 ค่ำ ปีฉลู 20 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2396 ทรงเป็นพระราชโอรสองค์ที่ 9 ในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว และทรงเป็นที่ 1 ในสมเด็จพระเทพศิรินทราบรมราชินี เสวยราชสมบัติ เมื่อวันพฤหัสบดี เดือน 11 ขึ้น 15 ค่ำ ปีมะโรง (พ.ศ. 2411) รวมสิริดำรงราชสมบัติ 42 ปี 22 วัน  เสด็จสวรรคต เมื่อวันเสาร์ เดือน 11 แรม 4 ค่ำ ปีจอ (23 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2453) ด้วยโรคพระวักกะ รวมพระชนมพรรษา 57 พรรษา ผู้คนมักออกพระนามว่า "ปิยมหาราช" แปลว่า ราชายิ่งใหญ่ผู้ทรงเป็นที่รัก และว่า "พระพุทธเจ้าหลวง"

พระพุทธเจ้าหลวง เป็นสมัญญานามที่ใช้สำหรับอ้างถึงพระมหากษัตริย์ที่สวรรคตแล้ว โดยเฉพาะกับพระมหากษัตริย์ในประวัติศาสตร์ไทย เช่น เมื่อสมเด็จพระเจ้าปราสาททองสวรรคต จึงมีการเรียกพระองค์ว่า สมเด็จพระพุทธเจ้าหลวงปราสาททอง  ต่อมาเมื่อพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวสวรรคต ก็มีการถวายสมัญญานามแด่พระองค์ว่า พระพุทธเจ้าหลวง จึงทำให้ประชาชนเข้าใจกันว่า พระพุทธเจ้าหลวงหมายถึงพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวเพียงพระองค์เดียว นอกจากนี้ พระเจ้าหลวง ก็ยังหมายถึง พระมหากษัตริย์ที่สละราชสมบัติแล้วแต่ยังทรงพระชนม์
